Is your code quality improvement flying blind?

So you (and the rest of your organization) are spending considerable time, money and headache on improving your code quality hoping to just keep apace with the competition. But do you know you where are or even worse: where you are going? Its an ancient truth that in order to know you must measure and conversely if you don't measure then - despite all good intentions and words - you really don't know.

So ask yourself this: are you measuring your code quality today? Because if you aren't then you really don't know what it is despite all the money, time and headache being put into code quality improvement and you really don't know where it is going either. Of course, you can always be lucky but do you really want to bet your business on luck?

Quality measurement, trend analysis, compliance analysis and benchmarking analysis help your organization to effectively determine whether quality improvement efforts are having effect and to what extent. QStudio Enterprise is unique in its capabilities in supporting your organization in this area.

Your organization will get answers to the following questions:

  • What is our code quality today in measurable terms?
  • What is our code quality trend? Is it improving or degrading?
  • Are our quality improvement efforts helping? If so how much?
  • To what extent is our code quality compliant to our standards today? That is, what is the quality of our code development process itself?
  • Is compliance to our quality standards improving or degrading?
  • How does our code benchmark against other (open source) code bases? In other words, how well does our code hold up against industry norms?

What did they give me?: The Outsourcer's and Insourcer's Nightmare

You're an outsourcer and your supplier is delivering you the code which you now must accept . You really need to measure the code quality to ensure that you won't be caught out down the line. Carrying out a detailed code quality assessment is an extremely powerful tool in assisting you in negotiating the acceptance .

Being able to place a detailed code report on the table with potential quality defects adds tremendously to your negotiating position and significantly reduces your ownership risk. That this risk is not hypothetical is demonstrated by the following anecdote: one of our prospects announced to their software supplier who had delivered the code that they intended to run an assessment using QStudio for Java. Within 24 hours the supplier withdrew the delivered code stating that they desired to carry out a few "minor" changes which would take another several weeks ...

You're an insourcer and you're negotiating with a major prospect on taking over their code base for maintenance and further development. The prospect is beating you down on price saying that you're assured the business, lucky to get the deal and the, by the way, the code is excellent so you hardly need to do any maintanance. If the code were that excellent you know that the prospect wouldn't be outsourcing it but how do you prove it? Again having a detailed code assessment in hand strengthens your negotiation position enormously and reduces your ownership risk considerably.

In both situations the stakes are often considerable. The ROI for the Enterprise is often achieved through one single assessment.
