QA Systems has carried out a survey among more than 1400 developers,
software architects and sofware managers world wide.
According to our data Eclipse from Eclipse.org
is currently the Java IDE with the largest market share of
45%, followed by Borland JBuilder with 16% and IDEA IntelliJ
with 10%.
The graphic below may be used in publications
provided QA Systems is cited as source. We have included a
survey accountability below.

Breakdown of respondents profile:

QStudioŽ - The Software Health Tool - is a static
analysis based software assessment and software process quality
support tool for software development.
The combination of world class analysis capabilities,
a unique and powerful built in ISO software quality model,
the broadest IDE coverage in the industry and the ability
to seamlessly upgrade to Enterprise capabilities all provided
free of charge to the Java development community allows QA
Systems to consolidate its market leadership.
Survey Accountability
The survey was taken over a 5 week period from
last week of August to the end of September 2003. Approximately
1400 respondents from more than 60 countries across the world
were requested to indicate the IDE they were using. Th respondents
were simply those who downloaded QStudio for Java Pro
Our belief is that this download population acted as an adequate
randomizer for a representative example of the Java community.
Our belief is based on the following premises:
- we offer a standalone version which does not require any
IDE (so we are not limited to any particular subset of IDE's).
Also we broadly market to the entire Java community and do
not market specifically through any one IDE platform.
- the companies responding - or more accurately the individuals
in the companies responding - appeared to be a representative
cross section.
- For developers and software architects the question of
which IDE they use is clear but for software managers we concluded
that they likely cited usage in their department. Statistically
speaking we assumed that they interpreted the question in
the same way and also statistically speaking the size of the
departments would average out so although we did not know
the actual numbers in use cited by a particular software manager
we drew the conclusion that market share size would remain
invariant.
